Sweetness
Yesterday, Raimi and I went to the park for a picnic. I got out a maroon batik blanket we keep in the trunk for just such a purpose, and told Raimi it was our picnic blanket, and he said, “But it doesn’t have checkers on it.”
We watched a huge swarm of 10-year old boys and girls playing some kind of cops and robbers game. A group of the boys climbed under the big play structure — sort of in a low tunnel underneath where people walk. One of them said, “let’s scream and make scary noises and scare the people up above.” Raimi climbed in there with the boys, who started screaming, “Auuuuggghhh!!! Aaaaahhh!!! Raaaaaaauuuugh!!!!”
And Raimi goes, “Peek a boo!”
Then later we went to the children’s museum, and noticed that the box turtle was walking back and forth and being very active. So Raimi says to the turtle, “Hello, turtle. Do you want to come play trains with me?”
He watched the turtle for another moment and then said, “Good walking!”
A woman at the library gave him his books and said, “See you ’round, like a donut.” Raimi smiled and said, uncertainly, “no…”
So at lunch I asked him what are other things that are round.
Me: See you ’round, like a wheel.
Raimi: [laughs]
Me: What else is round?
Raimi: a poop.
So that night, he’s having a tantrum for no apparent reason — doesn’t want his diaper, doesn’t want his pajamas, just wants to dawdle around. So to get him to stop being so crabby, I say, “remember today we went to the park? And the library? And we got five books? And remember we went to the children’s museum?”
And he says, smiling, “See you later, like a donut.”
