Important Words First
So, Raimi’s learning to read. We first noticed this by accident. He was watching me play Guitar Hero one day. I selected a song and prepared to completely rock out. The name of the song appeared on the screen, but I didn’t say anything to Raimi about what I’d selected.
“Is this ‘No One Knows’ Daddy?”
I look at him and go “Raimi??? Did you just read that?”
And he had this look on his face like “Oh my god! I did!”
So that was pretty excellent, and he’s not always willing to sit down and try to read, but here and there we’ve noticed him reading words.
So anyways, tonight after bath time we were doing one of Raimi’s favorite activities, which is to look at catalogs for toys. He knows he’s not going to actually get anything in the catalogs, but he likes to look at the pictures and learn about the new products, as we all do. So I was using this opportunity to get him to learn a few new words. With a little coaching he was able to sound out or figure out “new,” “play,” and “doll,” and “candy” and “color.”
Then we came to the word “game.”
“Can you sound this out? What does this word say?”
“Um, I don’t know.”
“Come on, sound it out. ~G ~A ~M ~E.”
“I don’t know.”
“What’s a word that starts with G?”
The kid knows his stuff.
