Scooter Libby Lied
Last night I realized I forgot to write about this. Raimi spent two weeks with my mom, sister, and his cousins Max and Jack. They had a great time, lots of spazzing out and going on missions, the hilarity and complex dynamics that are inevitable when you keep a 3, 4, and 5 year old together in a small cottage for two weeks.
But the really lasting impression on him was listening to my mom and sister talk politics, and specifically discuss Scooter Libby’s prison sentence. I guess my mom went on at length about how Scooter Libby committed perjury in an effort to cover up even more serious crimes, and how he deserved to go to prison, and how she didn’t like the suggestion that he’s a basically good man with years of distinguished service — because the fact is, he lied and was going to go to prison for it because that’s the penalty for perjury.
I guess the three boys got really interested in this conversation. They asked mom and Phyllis to explain it, and the explanation stuck. When they brought Raimi back he was very clear on what Scooter Libby did, and what happened as a reasult. Last night, I asked him again if he remembered who is Scooter Libby?
“I don’t know,” he said.
“You remember. What did Scooter Libby do?” I asked.
“Scooter Libby lied to the police,” he said, and then added in a serious and deliberate tone, “and he had to go to jail for two and a half years.”
You see folks. You shouldn’t lie. Just ask Raimi. Or Scooter Libby.
