Night before the big day

Tomorrow is Raimi’s first day of Kindergarten. We didn’t have childcare this week, so it’s been nice to spend a little extra time with him during the days. I think he’s really going to enjoy it, and Kevin & I have been talking about how proud we are of the boy he has become.

Tonight at bedtime, Grandma Iris called to wish him luck on his first day. He was already in bed, so Kevin just told him, Grandma says good luck tomorrow.

Raimi got a sad look on his face. I asked if he was ok, and he said, “Mommy, I’m just not sure about Kindergarten.”

(It nearly broke my heart, which reminds me that the other day when I used that expression about something else wonderful he’d said, he asked, “does your heart have an arrow in it?”)

So then he asked me to tell a story, and asked for it to involve Lamby (who we’ve decided won’t travel with him in his backpack tomorrow). I thought he’d see through my ruse when the story was about Lamby going to the learning kingdom and meeting a kitten, and a bear (“and a turtle!” piped up Kinnell from the bottom bunk. “And a wion. And a nudder bear,” lifting the animals crowding his bunk to show me that they should each be in the story.)

But Raimi really liked the story. He liked hearing that Lamby was worried because it was different but really liked the library and the salad bar and learning and meeting other animals. He asked for a repeat — for more stories of Lamby’s continuing adventures in the learning kingdom.
