Six million stars float for a moment above the river, then hurl themselves back down beneath the surface. A few land on the dock or the shore, glistening in the moonlight, trying to flop their way into the water. I wonder if the fish are all deaf now. I wonder if there is the skeleton of a boy resting where the firecracker exploded. People are more likely to die at night, out under the stars, alone, wondering where the surface is.
